Cardiff Central Library
The new Cardiff Central Library has achieved a BREEAM Excellent Rating through the re-use of an existing site and enhancements to local ecology. One of these enhancements being the nature roof installed on the KeyBEMO® Standing Seam roof system.
Installed by Richardson Roofing Ltd, the KeyBEMO® system uses natural stucco aluminium sheets fitted on a substrate to accommodate the additional weight of a nature roof. The nature roof provides many benefits such as providing a habitat for wildlife, removing pollutants from the air, helping reduce the buildings energy consumption, acoustic benefits and improvements in insulation.
Interesting facts:-
- The soil for the sedum roof was delivered in three tankers and had to be pumped up to the 6 storey high roof
- The roof is approximately the same size as a five a side football pitch
- In total, 1191 people were involved on-site during construction
- A Hawk was employed shortly after planting to ensure birds did not disturb the early growth
